Photo backdrops are now up on the first module. There is a lot of scenery and weathering add before this looks unified but its a start. I used LePage spray adhesive which was a poor idea, the photos didn’t stay attached everywhere, especially the small details. Where the backdrop came unstuck I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue to fix the problem which seems to have worked well.
The backdrop in the photo above is a photograph by John Morgan in 1976 that I edited. I removed some foreground details, repaired some signs of age on the tanks and extended the background past the edges of the photo. This photo and the extended horizon is about 44″ long. once trees, scrub and grass are added, I don’t think the sky edges will be as noticeable, especially with better lighting – if they are I’ll come back and fix it.
The original photo was published on the Algoma Eastern Railway Website. This site is now gone. Fortunately l managed to archive it on my computer. I am always so thankful for those who are willing to share their work with others. Here is John’s caption that went with the photo:
“The Shell Oil Terminal was not present in Little Current in 1930, but was added to the terminals complex at a later date. Shell’s facility was by far the largest of the bulk plant in Little Current, easily four or five times the size of the Texaco and Gulf Terminals in 1976. This most likely reflected the fact that in the 1970’s Shell was the major supplier of both fuels and lubricants to the E.B. Eddy Mill in Espanola, most of which were supplied out of Little Current.
South of the Little Current Swing Bridge, the line passes through a rock cut. The switch leading off to the Shell Terminal spur was located just to the south of this cut. In both photos on this page, the spur can be seen curving off to the southeast to reach the tank car loading platform.”
Other photos I’m using are from a postcard from 59 and google maps photos from along hwy 68.
